Muthas, 2015 has bit the dust and I’m back with a list of
all the best, and some of the worst albums, EPs, concerts, reissues and album
covers. Enjoy!
Thunder &
Lightning - The Best Albums of 2015
2015 seemed to be a slower year for releases, but there were
several excellent albums that grabbed my attention. Here’s the best of them:
Black Trip – Shadowline
This is a great sophomore release from these Swedish
purveyors of tasty, melodic, heavy 70s style hard rock. They sure do love Thin Lizzy which makes them all right in my book. Check out “Berlin Model 32” for a rollicking
good time.
Visigoth – The Revenant King
Crushing and bruising their way into my ironclad heart is
the debut LP from Salt Lake City’s own Visigoth. Full review here.
Venom – From The Very Depths
Cronos and crew roar back to life with a solid and
unexpectedly good album of signature latter day Venom. Full review
here.
Raven – ExtermiNation
NWOBHM stalwarts, Raven,
have crafted a superb album that easily eclipses their last couple of
albums. The LP is chock full of their
“athletic rock” stylings, and harkens back to their first three albums. Check
out the excellent “Fight.”
Armored Saint – Win Hands Down
The new album completely wipes the floor with their weak
sauce last album and has energy and inspiration to spare. The fire in the belly is palpable here as
these traditional metal stalwarts offer up an album of blistering guitar work
and amazing vocals. At least seven of
the cuts are classics and this is definitely their best album since Symbol of Salvation. Guitars, guitars, guitars everywhere!!!!
Check out “An Exercise In Debauchery.”
Sorcerer – In The Shadow Of The Inverted Cross
I can’t blame you if you’ve never heard of Sorcerer, because they had only
released two demos and then faded into obscurity over twenty years ago. They reformed in 2010 and this year they
cranked out this spectacular album of epic doom metal. If you like Tony Martin era Black Sabbath you will love this. Each track is like a pounding anvil of doom
straight to the skull! Check out “TheDark Tower Of The Sorcerer” for an idea of how good this album is.
Satan – Atom By Atom
Yet another superb album from these NWOBHM merchants. Check out the full review here.
Saxon – Battering Ram
Cleary, Saxon can
do no wrong. They are rivalled only by Motorhead and Overkill when it comes to only releasing excellent and consistent
albums in the last 25 years. On Battering Ram, the band offers up an
album that is full of top-notch power metal sprinkled with rock solid
traditional metal. Damn this is
good. Check out the title track.
Ram – Svbversvm
Whatever Sweden is doing to encourage excellent metal, they
are doing it right because Ram has
released the best album of their career.
I like their entire discography, but this LP displays loads of Screaming For Vengence era Priest-ish styleand very memorable songs. I can’t recommend this one enough! Please buy it and support this type of
traditional metal. Check out “Enslaver”
and you’ll understand my effusive praise.
Night Demon – Curse Of The Damned
What can I say about Night
Demon’s first LP that I haven’t already said in the full review here? Not much, other than to tell you that it’s
easily one of the best traditional metal albums released in the last 25
years. Buy or die!
Enforcer – From Beyond
Damn Enforcer is
good. They always deliver and this year
is no different. Check out my full
review here.
Motorhead – Bad Magic
I am writing this shortly after Lemmy slipped this mortal
coil for the great mead hall in the sky and it’s nearly impossible to overstate
just how important he was to heavy music of the past 40
years. He always delivered the
goods. Always. No faltering.
No trend hopping. No “return to
form” because he never was out of form. No comeback because he never left. This album is no different. Sure, he might sound a bit threadbare, but he
was 69 when he recorded this and on his last legs. Guess what?
Bad Magic is better than 99%
of the bullshit that most magazines, blogs, writers, journos and other idiots
drone on and on about. Was there ever an
album that was as much of a goodbye as this one? The lyrics are full of farewells and no
regrets. It’s a biography of a life of
no bullshit and no compromises. Check
out the lyrics to “Thunder & Lightning” which tell you all you ever need to
know about Lemmy and Motorhead:
I always wanted
the scream in the night
I always wanted
the noise and the light
Standing on the
stage the thrill never fades
The ultimate rage,
raving and fighting
Maybe you’ll
shake, maybe you’ll break
You’ll never
escape, thunder and lightning
One Short Life –
The Best EPs of 2015
Orchid – Sign Of The Witch
Surprise! Orchid’s
backwith another great EP. Of
course they are. Check out the full
review here.
Denner / Shermann - Satan's Tomb
This is a killer little EP that features the always amazing
Michael Denner and Hank Shermann ripping it up with solos and riffs galore. On top of that, the EP features the stellar
vocals of Sean Peck who also fronts Cage
and Death Dealer. This blows Force of Evil out of the water and it's very good, old school power
metal. A full length LP is supposed to follow
in 2016. Check out “Satan’s Tomb.”
No Sleep At All – The
Best Live Album of 2015
Enforcer – Live By
Fire
Not content with having one of the best studio albums of the
year, Enforcer have released the
best live album of the year – Live By
Fire. If you haven’t heard anything
from the band this is as good as any place to start because this is a virtual
greatest hits set. The band sounds great
as they blast through sixteen tracks live from the Kytarro Clue in Athens,
Greece. The CD version of the album also
include a cracking DVD featuring nine songs live from Japan. Finally, all versions of the release have a
bonus 3 track EP – Speak The Tongue Of
Heathen Gods – included to further add more bang for the buck for the fan. Check out the ripping “Scream Of The Savage.”
Dancing On Your
Grave - The Best Reissues of 2015
Wargasm – Why Play Around?
Finally an official reissue of the debut from Boston’s Wargasm! This album has been bootlegged for years, and
now we get a real reissue with great sound and nice packaging. If you are a fan of Motorhead and especially Tank
this will be right down your alley. This
is a definite must buy! Check out their
classic “Revenge.”
Shok Paris – Steel And Starlight (The Auburn Sessions)
Hello Cleveland!
Auburn Records has thankfully released their version of this 1987 USPM classic! This reissue features a completely different
mix from the I.R.S. Records release, the original running order and a host of
bonus tracks. The band sounds great on this and Vic Hix’s vocals are stellar as
always. His soulful, passionate tone
added so much to Shok Paris and set
them apart from their contemporaries. Check out their all time great cut “Tokye Rose.”
I’m So Bad (Baby I
Don’t Care) – The Biggest Disappointments of 2015
The Sword – High Country
I love The Sword
and I was looking forward to their new album.
Unfortunately, High Country
sounds like an album by a band that's rushed and confused. They can’t seem decide what they want do or sound like, and as a result the album never really gels. Also fifteen tracks is about five
too many and the album needs some judicious trimming. Nothing stuck with me after
repeated listens and quickly faded from my playlists. Oh well, maybe the next release will be more
focused.
Panzer – Send Them All To Hell
Who didn’t think a band featuring Schmier from Destruction and Herman Frank and Stefan
Schwarzmann of Accept wouldn’t be
great? Well, it wasn’t. The album did absolutely nothing for me and
is lacking any real hooks. It also got
lost in the early January release shuffle here in the United States. Maybe things will get better on the next LP.
We’re Artists!
We’re Sensitive As Shit! – The Best Album Cover of 2015
Panzer’s album
may have been a pile of meh, but their album cover is kick ass! A giant panzer! Flamethrowers! Fire! Skulls!
Apocalyptic visions! Count me in
with those visuals. Well done Gyula Havancsak.
Your artwork is everything a heavy metal cover should be. Hail and Kill!
Stone Deaf In The
USA – The Best Concerts of 2015
Night Demon – June 6th,
Gooski’s, Pittsburgh PA
Night Demon killed it in a tiny Pittsburgh club for a small
group of hardcore fans. Check out the full review and setlist here.
Overkill – September 21st,
Altar Bar, Pittsburgh PA
I hadn’t seen Overkill
since the Relixiv tour back in 2005, and thankfully they hadn’t missed a step in the
intervening decade. They were a
well-oiled machine and played an excellent set of classics and newer material
that had the pit going all night. I was
nursing a cold, but even I was singing along at the top of my lungs. I hope to see them again in the near future!
Saxon/Armored Saint –
September 17th, Altar Bar, Pittsburgh PA
Saxon hadn’t
played Pittsburgh since 1983 and Armored
Saint had never played Pittsburgh so this was destined to be a special
night. The Altar Bar was completely full
and the crowd was electric. This might
have been the most enthusiastic crowd I have ever been in. Armored
Saint seemed stunned by the thunderous response they received from the crowd
and they were in fine form. I hope they
come back to the Steel City soon. I
haven’t seen Saxon since 1998(!) and
they were amazing. The crowd was
euphoric and sang along to every song.
The band even took requests because they had been absent from Pittsburgh
for so long. God damn it was great. It’s nights like these that remind me why I
put up with all the bullshit of going to a live show. There’s nothing better than being in a crowd that’s
completely at one with a band’s performance – totally chill inducing.
Y&T – May 5th,
Altar Bar, Pittsburgh PA
Finally! Y&T is one of my all-time favorite
bands and I own their entire discography, but I had never managed to see
them. Thankfully, I have now and they
more than delivered. Dave Meniketti
still sounds great and his playing is superb.
The band was in great form and they had a great rapport with the
audience. Thanks for the great show and
I hope to see you again!
Muthas, Swedish metallers Enforcer are back with their fourth album, From Beyond, and it's a blazing 42 minutes of 100% pure,
unadulterated, chromium steel. 2013's Death
By Fire was great, and this new album is definitely its equal, if not even
better! It’s rock-solid and all of the songs are top notch, which makes it a
great companion to Death By Fire.
There are loads of balls-out speed metal tracks mixed with heavy doses of
traditional metal, and that's a winning combination in my book.
From Beyond
features mostly speedier cuts, as it to be expected from Enforcer, but it does
have a couple of longer, epic tracks that are very good. Frankly, there aren't any bad songs on the
album at all. It's clear that Enforcer knows how to write excellent
songs, and one of their strengths is their choruses - they are total
earworms! Some bands struggle with this,
but Enforcer's choruses will be
stuck in your head long after you're done listening to the album. Also, the
album is very well sequenced and is the perfect length for vinyl - all of which
is conducive to a great listening experience.
"Destroyer" is the absolutely ripping opening cut
and it's also the lead single and video.
Check it out below:
"Undying Evil" is the second track and it's another
freewheel burner with an anthemic chorus and lyrics about vampires. Check out the video for this
bloodthirsty killer of a tune:
"One With Fire" and “Hell Will Follow” are
examples of the killer, balls out, speedsters that have become a staple of Enforcer albums. Once again, the band
has included an excellent instrumental - "Hungry They Will Come" -
and it's positioned perfectly at the midpoint of the proceedings. I love that Enforcer has a real appreciation for meaty instrumentals, as
they've become something of a lost art since their 80s heyday. Well done lads. "Below The Slumber"
and "Mask Of Red Death" are the two longer, epic tracks and they are
both very good. They ably showcase
another aspect of the band's excellent songwriting skills. Would you like to hear some sweet,
dual-guitar Maidenisms without
ploughing through a 92 minute, two CD monstrosity? If the answer is yes, you
should definitely check out the guitar noodling on “The Banshee.”
In other news, Enforcer
is releasing their first live album – Live By Fire – on November 20th and they
are embarking on a co-headling tour of the States with Warbringer, Cauldron,
and Exmortus. Here are the dates:
The Bottom Line: From
Beyond is a great follow-up to Death
By Fire and is well worth picking up if you are a fan of Traditional Metal,
Speed Metal or plain old good music. Enforcer proves once again why they are the cream of crop of the NWOTHM. Highly recommended!
Muthas, 2013 was yet another great year for Metal and we have
picked a Baker’s Dozen of the best metal albums of the year. We’ve also picked the best live releases,
best reissues, best concerts and the biggest disappointments of the year. Read on!
The Thirteen Best Albums of 2013
2013 brought an avalanche of quality steel to abuse your
tattered eardrums. These are the thirteen albums that dominated our turntables,
CD players, and MP3 players at The Metal Blog of Metal.
Enforcer – Death By Fire
Swedish speedsters Enforcer crush skulls on their third LP with
a stellar mixture of U.S. Speed, NWOBHM and Scandinavian Glory Metal. This is a very focused, all killer-no filler
collection of ripping Speed Metal and at just under 40 minutes, it's the perfect length for vinyl. Take a listen to the awesome triumvirate of
“Mesmerized By Fire,” “Take Me Out of This Nightmare,” and “Crystal Suite” if
you want to hear superb traditional metal done like the titans of ye olden
daze. If only Iron Maiden could conjure up something as compelling rather than
being an old man prog band.
Orchid – The Mouth of Madness
The Band That Can Do No Wrong continues their dominance with
their latest full length disc of 70s doom.
The Mouth of Madness is what everybody wanted 13 to sound like, which of
course, it didn’t. Orchid serves up more amazingly hooky traditional metal as if they’ve been doing this since 1971. Damn
these guys are good. Once again, Theo
Mindell’s art matches the music and adds to the overall experience - believe it
or not, things like cover art and fonts matter. You should immediately buy this platter of crushing doom mastery.
Holy Grail – Ride The Void
California metallions Holy
Grail return with an album chock full of guitar wizardry and catchy
anthems. It’s easy to see that they will
be one of the modern traditional metal bands that will gain a large
audience. Once again the songs are loaded with insanely tasty riffs, leads and solos, as well as a pounding bottom end and the masterful vocals of James Paul Luna. They also have an amazing work ethic and are tireless road
warriors. We managed to catch them twice this year alone in two separate cities. Hailz to them for cranking out
a disc that simply announces – WE CAME TO SHRED!
Saxon – Sacrifice
Speaking of road warriors, Saxon has released yet another album of rock hard traditional metal.
This time they have returned to more of the power metal sound they had on Metalhead, rather than the midpaced
material of their last album. The result
is excellent and another solid entry in their lengthy catalog. All hail the mighty Saxon!
Hell – Curse & Chapter
Hell’s second
official album is about 80% new material with a few re-recorded ancient demos. It’s a great follow up to Human Remains and dispels any fears that
Hell wouldn’t be able to put out new
material to match their 80s output. Once
again they offer up a riff-packed journey through diabolically dangerous
metallic landscapes. Definitely worth the coin and
one of the best of the year. Buy it!
Night Demon – Night Demon
This is absolutely our favorite release of 2013 here at The
Metal Blog of Metal. Our opinion of the
album hasn’t changed since we reviewed it here back in May. It’s an amazing EP that showcases a superb
NWOBHM sound akin to Grim Reaper, Iron Maiden and Diamond Head. It’s a goddamn
metal masterpiece in every way possible!
We eagerly await their full length LP in 2014 and it should kick much
ass. Hailz boys and thanks for a great EP!
U.D.O. – Steelhammer
U.D.O. the band
and Udo the man finally crank out an album to match the ferocity of the latest Accept releases and ditch that shitty
electronic guitar sound that had marred their last couple of albums. There are a couple of weird diversions on the
album, but it is dominated by vicious, pounding steel the majority of the
time. Check out our full review here. This is definitely worth adding to
your U.D.O./Accept collection.
Witch Cross – Axe To Grind
Who ever thought Witch
Cross would release another album? Not us, that’s for sure. 1984’s Fit
For Fight is one of the crown jewels of Danish metal, so it would be tough
to follow up. Unfortunately, original
vocalist Alex “Savage” Nyborg Madsen did not take part in the reunion, but, fortunately, the band chose Kevin Moore as his replacement. Moore is a former touring member of Oliver/Dawson Saxon, and as a result, Axe To Grind has a heavy Saxon influence. This is straight down the middle, meat and
potatoes, traditional heavy metal. It’s
nothing fancy, but it’s executed brilliantly and is very enjoyable. Sure, it doesn’t sound like “Tears of a
Clown,” but it still kicks all kinds of ass.
Pick it up!
Motorhead – Aftershock
So who thought we might never hear another Motorhead album? Thankfully, Lemmy and the boys managed to
record one hell of a great album considering Lemmy’s health problems. Amazingly it’s much more aggressive than the somewhat
lackluster The World Is Ours and
there’s not a dull moment on it. It’s
probably their best since Inferno and we have you banging your head with wild
abandon. Isn’t that what you’ve come to
expect from Motorhead? Damn straight it is.
Vicious Rumors – Electric Punishment
Vicious Rumors
continues down the path that they forged with Razorback
Killers and put out another excellent album that showcases their superb
USPM sound. Unfortunately, this album
has gotten lost in the shuffle do to vocalist Brian Allen having to leave the
band due to family issues. Don't let that dissuade you as there are
many killer cuts on it such as “I Am The Gun,” “Electric Punishment,” and
“Thirst For A Kill.” Get it!
Black Sabbath – 13
We expected this album to be an unmitigated disaster, but,
amazingly enough, it’s a good album.
Certainly the cover art is completely lazy bullshit and the album title sucks
ass. Also, the lack of Bill Ward is very
noticeable and the album is another victim of shithead Rick Rubin’s loudness
wars. However, Tony Iommi’s riffs are
amazing as ever, Geezer’s bass is crushing and Ozzy’s voice is acceptable. The tracks sound like either a very good
early Ozzy album, or a Dio Sabbath album with Ozzy on vocals. 13 doesn’t invoke memories of the Sabs 70s mastery (if you want that, listen to the new Orchid), but it’s
not a black mark on their legacy
either. Be sure to pick up the special edition with the track "Naivete In Black" on it, as that song is excellent.
BAT – Primitive Age (Demo)
This was a late entry to the list, but it’s very worthy of
high praise. BAT is made up of Ryan Waste from Municipal Waste and Volture,
Felix Griffin of DRI fame, and Nick
Poulos of Cannabis Corpse and Volture. What we have here is greasy, dirty speed
metal/thrash that pays a great amount of homage to the mighty Venom.
Waste does his best Chronos on vox and bass and the result is cranking
steel fury that will please both the oldest and youngest Thrashers alike. It might only be a demo, but it’s better than
the majority of slickly produced albums that are constantly foisted upon the
Metal buying public. Go here and
download it for free! I hope they do a
7” vinyl release asap! Total wreckage indeed!
Satan – Life Sentence
Well holy shit, this is awesome! One usually cringes when an old NWOBHM band has
a reunion and promises a return to their original sound. Normally the result is a sub-par collection
of middling garbage that fails to re-capture the magic of their early
material. That couldn’t be further from
the truth with Life Sentence because
it’s a face-melting collection of NWOBHM excellence. Brian Ross sounds great and the songs will
wreck your neck like it’s 1982. This
should have been the follow up to Court
In The Act back in the day. Buy this
album immediately if not sooner! Damn it's good!
Live – In the Raw! - The best
live albums/DVDs
Testament – Dark Roots of Thrash
Bay Area bruisers Testament
deliver a new live album/DVD that perfectly captures their current live
set. The camera work on the DVD is
particularly good and it is one of the most cinematic treatments we have seen
of concert footage. The setlist is
evenly split between classics and current material, but omits most of their 90s
output. Thankfully the mix is much
better than the last couple of times we saw Testament live, because you can actually hear Chuck's vocals! If you like Testament then you should definitely add this to your collection.
Dio – Finding The Sacred Heart – Live In Philly
1986
This CD/DVD features Dio at the height of their popularity
with their massive stage show featuring lasers, knights in plate armor and a huge,
animatronic dragon. The band sounds
great and Ronnie is in fine voice.
Viewing the DVD is a somewhat melancholy experience because it will
remind you that the Man On The Silver Mountain has taken his final bow, but
seeing him at his ferocious best helps take your mind off of it. Long Live Rock n Roll!
Iron Maiden – Maiden England ‘88
Another in a long line of Maiden archival releases that really illustrates that Maiden knows how to make money like
Gene Simmons. What you get is the
legendary Maiden England ’88 show on CD/DVD that showcases Maiden on the cusp of slipping into disarray, but still at their peak. They still sounded great at this point and Seventh Son was a decent enough album,
but mediocrity was waiting in the wings.
The second disc of the DVD is especially nice because it features part 3
of the history of Iron Maiden as
well as the long out of print 12 Wasted Years documentary.
Best Reissues
2013 featured several excellent reissues that were long
awaited in the Metal world.
Heretic– From
The Vault…Tortured and Broken
Finally!!! Metal Blade
Records released this excellent box set that includes the Torture Knows No Boundary EP, the Breaking Point LP along with tons of bonus tracks and a DVD! It’s well worth the cost for the EP alone,
which had never officially been released on CD. Grab this one before it
goes out of print!
Jag Panzer – Tyrants, Ample Destruction, Shadow Thief,
Dissident Alliance
We never thought there would be official reissues of Jag Panzer’s early catalog due to disagreements
between former guitarist Joey Tafolla and the rest of the band. Somehow that was all worked out and not only
do we get these reissues, but Joey is back in the band! You can pitch your shitty bootlegs in the
trash and snap up these reissues from High Roller Records in a variety of
formats – CD, colored Vinyl, Picture Disc and even a luxurious Picture Disc
box set. All the releases have been nicely
remastered with loads of bonus tracks and restored artwork. Buy or die!
Y&T – Earthquake: The A&M Years 1981-1985
This is a very nice 4 disc box set with the best output form
San Francisco legends Y&T. The set includes the Earthquake, Black Tiger, Meanstreak, In Rock We Trust, and Down For The Count studio albums along
with the Open Fire and BBC Friday Rock Show live albums. This release showcases Y&T at the peak of their careers and is fairly cheap as
well. If you don’t already own these
albums, you should definitely buy this and enjoy the hard rocking excellence of
a band that should have been huge.
Witch Cross– All
That’s Fit For Fighting
This superb 3CD/1 DVD box set essentially purges the vaults
of everything Witch Cross did before
their new album Axe To Grind. You get the ultra-classic Fit For Fight along with all their 80s demos and, amazingly enough,
a DVD of a live show and music videos(!) that had never seen the light of
day. It’s all wrapped up in a very nice,
thick, flip top box with a magnetic closure.
Truly an exceptional release and a must have for fans of classic Metal.
Best Concerts
Metal Alliance Tour –
4/7/13 Cincinnati, Ohio
Great package tour featuring, Anthrax, Exodus, Municipal Waste, High On Fire and Holy Grail
ripping it up for 5 hours! All the bands
sounded great and it was a real treat to get our copies of Among The Living and Worship
Music signed. The only complaint was
that Holy Grail didn’t have a very
long set as it would have been nice to hear more from them.
The mighty Orange Goblin tore it up on Halloween weekend in the Steel City. They played an energetic set featuring songs from most of their albums. It was their second swing through town in just 6 months and they did not disappoint. Holy Grail once again was excellent and proved that they should be making the step up to headliner soon.
Biggest Disappointments
Ghost
– Infestissumam
It’s become fashionable to hate on Ghost
because of all the coverage they get in the music press, but the problem with
their new album doesn’t have anything to do with hype. The real problem is Infestissumam is
mostly boring and forgettable. The album
sounds pleasant enough, but nothing really sticks in the memory after the album
is done. In fact, the If You Have Ghost
EP is more interesting and it consists of cover songs. Try working on some more memorable hooks
guys and better luck next time.
Newsted
– Heavy Metal Music
We really wanted to like this album and it pains us to have to write
this. Jason is a great guy and his
enthusiasm for his new band and metal is
obvious. Unfortunately, Heavy Metal Music is
rather bland and generic and Jason's vocals leave much to be desired. The whole album sounds like a heavy/alt
record that would have been released in 1994. Blah. Also, what’s with all the
stupid song titles like “Soldierhead,” “Ampossible,” “Kindevillusion,” and “Futureality?” Stop that shit Jason, it's goofy. Here’s hoping that his next album is killer. Have a great 2014, and, as always, MAKE MINE METAL!
Canadian power trio Cauldron is back with another molten slab of pure metal straight outta 1986.Burning Fortune is the follow up to their 2009 album Chained To The Nite. That album was great but Cauldron have managed to top it as the songwriting is even better with the tracks being very hooky and melodic.
Cauldron emulates mid 80’s metal perfectly without ever sounding completely derivative of any particular artist.Clearly the band love that era of music and have set out to recreate the sound. They are considered one of the bands in the forefront of the New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal (NWOTHM) but in interviews the band repeatedly stress that they just play heavy metal and aren’t part of any trend.Front man Jason Decay was the lead man in Goat Horn and they played a similar style for years before the NWOTHM existed.
The band clearly agrees with The Metal Blog of Metal's position that the 80 minute time limit on compact discs has led to album bloat with 13-16 tracks many of which are filler. It's far better to have an album of less than 50 minutes with 10 or so great tracks that leave the listener wanting more.Burning Fortune is a vinyl-friendly 38 minutes long with 9 tracks in the standard version and 42 minutes long with the bonus track "Serpent Sorceress" on the limited edition.
The album kicks off in a roaring fashion with "All Or Nothing" which is a fast paced, hook laden song about giving your all.It includes backing vocals by Olof Wikstrand of Enforcer. "All Or Nothing" is also the lead single for the album and the band has released a video for it.
"Miss You To Death" is a mid paced song about lost love and would make a great sing along in a live setting. "Frozen In Fire" is an up tempo track about an evil woman that gets hers. This is followed up by "Tears Have Come" which is another song about lost love that sports a great guitar solo by Ian Chains.
"I Confess" is actually a cover of an original by the Detroit band Halloween. This can be found on Halloween'sVicious Demos from 1990 and is a superb fit for Cauldron.Jason Decay and Halloween vocalist Brian Thomas share a very similar vocal style. "I Confess" is also very hooky and another highlight on the album.Next up is another fantastic track "Rapid City/Unchained Assault." This is another fast track with a great chorus and excellent guitar work. Lyrically it seems to be a tale of the unforgiving nature of life on the road. "Unchained Assault" is a short guitar solo that features Ian Chains shredding it up.
"Queen of Fire" is another mid-paced song about lost love and mysterious women. "Breaking Through" picks up the pace and has lyrics about breaking chains and shaking brains. My guess is Cauldron is name checking Silver Mountain and their legendary 1984 album Shakin' Brains. Regardless, it's another outstanding track. Wrapping up the standard edition cd is "Taken By Desire" which is another fast track centered around failed dreams.
The Limited Edition of the album contains the bonus track "Serpent Sorceress" which tells the story of the Medusa. If you don't want to spring for the Limited Edition disc this track is available as an iTunes download. In fact, the whole album is a mere $ 6.99 on iTunes which is a fantastic value.
The Limited Edition also includes a special edition ofChromium Dioxide magazine which is centered around Cauldron. If you are not familiar with Chromium Dioxide it's a heavy metal magazine from Canada put together by two long time metalheads. It covers all sorts of long lost and forgotten metal as well as horror movies, wrestling, etc... It's a really cool magazine and something most metalheads would enjoy. Check 'em out here and order an issue or four.
Formats:
Standard CD
Limited Edition CD with one bonus track and a copy of Chromium Dioxidemagazine
Vinyl in various colors (red, black, yellow and orange) with a copy of Chromium Dioxide magazine.

The Bottom Line: Burning Fortune is a fantastic album of traditional metal with clean, mid-range vocals and great riffs. This is pure METAL with zero modern touches or sensibilities. Buy or die.
